Living a Relevant Christian life

Integrity When No One Is Watching

Integrity is one of the most essential qualities of a follower of Jesus — and one of the rarest. It’s easy to talk about integrity, but living it out often comes with a cost. Today, I want to share a moment from my own life that tested my integrity, and then connect it to one of the most powerful integrity stories in Scripture: David sparing Saul’s life.

A Lesson I’ll Never Forget

I was in another country — a very poor country. I had been invited as one of the main speakers at a large conference. Somewhere between 5,000 and 7,000 people were gathered, hungry for God and desperate for hope.

Throughout the day, speaker after speaker came up. Then the final speaker stepped onto the stage.

He arrived in a limousine.

He wore gold jewelry.

And he preached a message that made my spirit grieve.

He told these already poor people that if they wanted money, they needed to give him money.

He misquoted Scripture.

He manipulated the Word of God to take advantage of people who barely had anything to give.

I wasn’t the organizer.

I didn’t have the microphone.

But I did have my integrity.

So I stood up.

I walked off the stage.

And I made sure everyone saw that I did not agree with what was happening.

After the conference, the organizers were upset. They asked why I left. I told them plainly:

“Integrity means everything to me. We should not stand for something that is obviously corrupt.”

I corrected the misinterpretation of Scripture.

I explained why it was wrong.

And to their credit — they listened. They apologized for not doing the same.

It was a powerful reminder:

Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one else is willing to do the same.

David Spares Saul’s Life — A Biblical Picture of Integrity

Few stories capture integrity like David’s encounter with Saul in the cave. David had every reason to take Saul’s life. Saul was hunting him. Saul was jealous of him. Saul wanted him dead.

But David chose integrity over opportunity.

Here is the full passage:

1Sa 24:1 When Saul came back from fighting the Philistines, he was told “Now David is in the desert near En Gedi.”

1Sa 24:2 Then Saul took 3,000 of the best-trained men from all Israel and went to search for David and his men on the Rocks of the Wild Goats.

1Sa 24:3 He came to some sheep pens along the road where there was a cave. Saul went into it to relieve himself while David and his men were sitting further back in the cave.

1Sa 24:4 David’s men told him, “Today is the day the LORD referred to when he said, ‘I’m going to hand your enemy over to you. You will do to him whatever you think is right.’” David quietly got up and cut off the border of Saul’s robe.

1Sa 24:5 But afterward, David’s conscience bothered him because he had cut off the border of Saul’s robe.

1Sa 24:6 He said to his men, “It would be unthinkable for me to raise my hand against His Majesty, the LORD’S anointed king, since he is the LORD’S anointed.”

1Sa 24:7 So David stopped his men by saying this to them and didn’t let them attack Saul. Saul left the cave and went out onto the road.

1Sa 24:8 Later, David got up, left the cave, and called to Saul, “Your Majesty!” When Saul looked back, David knelt down with his face touching the ground.

1Sa 24:9 David asked Saul, “Why do you listen to rumors that I am trying to harm you?

1Sa 24:10 Today you saw how the LORD handed you over to me in the cave. Although I was told to kill you, I spared you, saying, ‘I will not raise my hand against Your Majesty because you are the LORD’S anointed.’

1Sa 24:11 My master, look at this! The border of your robe is in my hand! Since I cut off the border of your robe and didn’t kill you, you should know and be able to see I mean no harm or rebellion. I haven’t sinned against you, but you are trying to ambush me in order to take my life.

1Sa 24:12 May the LORD decide between you and me. May the LORD take revenge on you for what you did to me. However, I will not lay a hand on you.

1Sa 24:13 It’s like people used to say long ago, ‘Wickedness comes from wicked people.’ But I will not lay a hand on you.

1Sa 24:14 Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom are you pursuing? A dead dog? One flea?

1Sa 24:15 So the LORD must be the judge. He will decide between you and me. He will watch and take my side in this matter and set me free from you.”

1Sa 24:16 When David finished saying this, Saul asked, “Is that you speaking, my servant David?” and Saul cried loudly.

1Sa 24:17 He told David, “You are more righteous than I. You treated me well while I treated you badly.”

David had the chance to take a shortcut to the throne — but he refused.

He chose righteousness over revenge.

He chose character over convenience.

He chose God’s timing over his own ambition.

That’s integrity.

Integrity Protects Your Calling

Integrity is not about being perfect.

It’s about being consistent.

It’s about being honest.

It’s about being faithful when no one is watching.

David’s integrity preserved his destiny.

Your integrity will preserve yours.

Final Thought

Whether you’re standing on a stage in another country or hiding in a cave like David, integrity is the same:

Do the right thing — even when no one else is willing to do the same.

That’s the kind of life that honors God.

That’s the kind of life that influences others.

That’s the kind of life that leaves a legacy.
