The Prayer From the Savior

The Prayer From the Savior: A Look at John 17:1–26

John 17 stands as one of the most intimate and profound moments in all of Scripture. Often called The High Priestly Prayer, it captures Jesus speaking directly to the Father just before His arrest — likely in or near the Garden of Gethsemane. What makes this prayer so breathtaking is not only its depth, but its direction. Jesus wasn’t just praying for His disciples.
He was praying for us.

Two thousand years ago, the Savior of the world carried you in His heart. That alone is worth pausing over.

In this post, we’ll take a simple, thoughtful look at the themes of Jesus’ final recorded prayer before the cross.

  1. Jesus Prayed for His Gift to Humanity

Jesus begins by speaking about the gift He came to bring: eternal life. This isn’t just life after death — it’s life in God’s kingdom, life that begins the moment we know Him.

He declares that His earthly mission is complete.
He has revealed the Father.
He has taught the truth.
He has lived the glory of God before the world.

Now He asks for the glory (doxa) to rest upon Him as He walks toward the cross. His eyes were fixed on the mission from the beginning, and even in prayer, He is preparing Himself for the suffering that will redeem humanity.

  1. Jesus Prayed for His Disciples

Next, Jesus turns His attention to the disciples — the men who walked with Him, learned from Him, and would soon carry His message to the world.

He prays for their faith, knowing the trials ahead.
He prays for their safety in a world that would oppose them.
He prays for their stability, their endurance, their spiritual protection.

And then He prays for something that remains essential today:
unity.

In verse 11, Jesus asks that His followers would be one, just as He and the Father are one. This divine unity would become the foundation for spreading the Kingdom.
We cannot move mountains alone.
We need each other.
We need unity rooted in God.

In verse 17, He prays for God’s power to prepare them — to sanctify them — so they can boldly preach the Gospel.

  1. Jesus Prayed for Us

Then comes one of the most astonishing moments in Scripture.

In verse 20, Jesus prays for everyone who would believe in Him through the message of the disciples.

That means every believer across every century.
That means you.

He prays for our unity as believers.
He prays that we would carry the same glory given to the disciples.
He prays that we would recognize His power working in our lives.

And He closes His prayer by asking that we would carry the same love — the same divine love — that the Father has for the Son.
A love that transforms.
A love that reaches the world.

  1. Why This Prayer Still Matters

It’s remarkable that Jesus’ final major prayer wasn’t about avoiding suffering or escaping the cross.
It was about His followers — then and now.

His heart was set on:

  • our unity
  • our protection
  • our mission
  • our transformation
  • our love for one another

Who am I to ignore a prayer Jesus prayed over my life?
Who are we to treat lightly the unity, love, and purpose He asked the Father to give us?
We should live in a way that reflects the heart of that prayer.
