Joh 15:15  I don’t call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn’t know what his master is doing. But I’ve called you friends because I’ve made known to you everything that I’ve heard from my Father.

Joh 15:16  You didn’t choose me, but I chose you. I have appointed you to go, to produce fruit that will last, and to ask the Father in my name to give you whatever you ask for.

Joh 15:17  Love each other. This is what I’m commanding you to do

Being a Friend of Jesus should be a high honor. Jesus told the disciples that they were not servants but Friends. Friends who were so close that they knew about all the secrets Jesus shared. Friends who shared in the pain and in the gain. The Greek word for Friends in this passage is Philos which means close companions and neighbors. ( Remember the greatest two commandments? We were command to love our NEIGHBOR as ourselves.) There is a deep connection with those who are friends with the Savior.

What can we learn from this passage about being friends with Jesus?

  1. We are not servants. ( Means being bound or a slave.) Not being a servant means we have total freedom in Christ. The shackles are completely removed and our freedom papers have been given.
  2. We have divine knowledge. Jesus told his FRIENDS everything the Father had told him. He revealed to the disciples God’s holy plans and direction. As we grow closer to the Lord; his deep secrets come forth. He loves to share his thoughts and ideas with his best friends.
  3. We are chosen. Our Friend Jesus chose us to be his friends. Something that we should never take likely. He is very careful of who he chooses. He is very careful with whom he calls friends. Are you chosen? Are you a friend of Christ?
  4. We have been appointed. Our Friend sends us out to do his will. We are appointed to Go! We are appointed to Produce Fruit! We are appointed to have lasting Fruit! We are appointed to ask of the Father anything through the name of Jesus and see miracles happen! Being appointed means to be ordained for a task or tasks. Friends of Jesus are ordained by our Lord! How exciting is that? Ordained people are bestowed with power to do amazing things.
  5. We are called to love each other. True friends love each other and take care of each other. They don’t gossip about each other. They don’t try to destroy each other. They protect each other. They fight battles together. The Unity of the saints is one of the greatest weapons against the enemy of this world. If we are air tight in love and bond, then the devil can not win within us.

What an honor to be a friend of Jesus’. How humbling it is. Friends of Jesus are special and unique. We are people with purpose because of our relationship with our Best Friend. I encourage you today to be a friend to the greatest friend in the world. He has chosen you. He has filled you with his purpose. Let today take on a new meaning for you. Stand up and walk out into the world knowing that you are a Friend of Jesus.
