Hunger is something that comes from within us. We must desire the things of God and desire the Heart of Change. God will not make us hungry for the things of him. He will simply put appetizers in front of us, but he will not cause our hunger. He desires for us to truthfully hunger for him.
I. The call to hunger and thirst
a. Matthew 5:6 (KJV)
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Luke 6:21 (KJV)
Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.
1. This hunger means having a strong desire for something
a. Jesus came to give us a taste to see what His great things would be like if we follow Him.
1. When you hunger and thirst for something: you realize something is missing. You start to long for it and you want to fill that void.
a. John 7:32-44 (KJV)
The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him. [33] Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me. [34] Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come. [35] Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? [36] What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come? [37] In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. [38] He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. [39] (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
[40] Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. [41] Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? [42] Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? [43] So there was a division among the people because of him. [44] And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.
II. Desire the Spring to come forth.
a. John 6:35 (KJV)
And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
b. Striking the rock and believing for the life.
a. Exodus 17:6 (KJV)
Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
1. [Horeb] ( Means desolate) Travelers have described what is believed to be the rock struck by Moses. It is a vast block of granite, 15 ft. long, 10 ft. broad, and 12 ft. high. It has holes and channels which could have been formed only by the bursting and running out of water. The rock that Moses struck supplied water for perhaps 6,000,000 people or more and their stock. The flow then ceased and had to be started again by another miracle at a later date (Numbers 20:8-11).
c. More to come
1. Numbers 20:8 (KJV)
Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
d. Just come to the Lord and drink
1. Acts 2
2. Acts 3:18
3. Acts 19:1-7
4. I Corinthians 14
