Living a Relevant Christian life

The WalkAbout

Hebrews 5:11-14 GW  We have a lot to explain about this. But since you have become too lazy to pay attention, explaining it to you is hard.  (12)  By now you should be teachers. Instead, you still need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God\’s word. You need milk, not solid food.  (13)  All those who live on milk lack the experience to talk about what is right. They are still babies.  (14)  However, solid food is for mature people, whose minds are trained by practice to know the difference between good and evil.

The Australian Aborigines have a walkabout for their 12-13 year olds in order for them to become men or endure the path to manhood.  These 12-13 year olds are made to survive by themselves for 6 months in order to complete their rights of passage. They would train for years with the tribal elders and prepare for their Walkabouts. Finally when that day comes, the young men enter their walkabout and survive off the land for the next 6 months. Once the young men return from their adventure, they are welcome back into the tribe as men and given more responsibilities in the tribe.

Christians have a right of passage and can endure Walkabouts too. The writer of Hebrews spoke about the need for believers to simply grow up. It is time that we are mature into full disciples of the living God. Every believer should be preachers of the gospel and disciplining others in the truth of the Lord. We are carriers of the message and we must share His word with others.

The writer of this passage made these following statements.
1. The deeper truth of God\’s word can\’t be given to lazy believers. It would be like casting pearls before the swine. Only those seeking more of his truth can obtain it.
2. Mature believers should be teachers of God\’s word. In other words, going to church and listening to a message without sharing that truth with others is simply useless. It is like banging your head against a 6 inch thick stainless steal wall.
3. Mature believers obtain the mysteries of God\’s word. Immature believers are still on the basics.
4. Mature believers can quickly determine between what is evil and what is from God\’s goodness.

As believers, we need a divine walkabout. One that detoxifies our sin and strongholds. One that draws us closer to the living God. One that reveals our deepest bondage and brings us to our knees before the Living God. Once our Walkabout is over; we can emerge as true, mature believers who are ready to take on the World for the Kingdom of God.
